science aside...
A large majority of my free time is spent on two wheels with the Rice University Cycling & Triathlon team. I cycle for sport and for transportation, and have completed sprint, olympic, and half ironman distance triathlons, as well as half and full marathons. Training for and competing in endurance sports has proven tremendously helpful for my research and general well-being. Triathlons require you to set goals, create and commit to detailed training schedules, and, most importantly, persevere-- all useful skills for managing research projects. Endurance sports also give me a healthy physical outlet to manage stress when research feels overwhelming. In my spare time, I also frequent Rice's graduate student bar, Valhalla. Valhalla is a social hub where students, staff and faculty from across campus and beyond gather to discuss science or anything-but-science. For a year, I served as the personnel manager at Valhalla, and I still hold a weekly bartending shift.
